A word brought by the English from India; of uncertain origin; cf. Skr. varaa, Pg. varanda, Sp. baranda, Malay baranda.

(Arch.) An open, roofed gallery or portico, adjoining a dwelling house, forming an out-of-door sitting room. See Loggia.
