(Chem.) A binary compound of silicon, or one regarded as binary. R.now called silane, silicon hydride, or silicane. The term silane is used as the theoretical parent compound of a large series of derivatives in which one or more of the hydrogens are substituted; the term is also used generically to refer to any one of a large series of silicon compounds, including a series containing silicon-silicon bonds, analogous to the compounds containing carbon.
